Excursion to Ränskälänkorpi

Harvesting methods on drained peatland forests
Ränskälänkorpi flagship experimental research and demonstration site established on a nutrient-rich Norway spruce-dominated drained peatland, provides the latest research knowledge on soil microbial interactions with greenhouse gas exchange measurements. During the field trip, you will hear how different harvesting methods (clearcutting, continuous-cover forestry, and non-harvested control) influence on soil water table levels, soil processes, soil microbe community and their function.
Excursion is hosted by Holisoils (https://holisoils.eu/) research project coordinated by Natural Resources Institute Finland (www.luke.fi).

Time: Saturday 14 June, the excursion will start at 9 AM (EEST) downtown Helsinki, return by 6 PM.
Price: 90€, lunch and coffee included.

Excursion to Lettosuo

This excursion will head to Southwestern Finland, where some of the country’s oldest and deepest peatlands occur. We will visit both a forestry-drained peatland and a nearby pristine pine bog.  First, the participants will be introduced to Lettosuo is a field experiment at forestry-drained spruce-dominated peatland where different management options, including clear cut and continuous cover forestry and their impact on soil processes, greenhouse gas fluxes and carbon pools have been measured since 2009.  Continuous cover forestry, creating an uneven-aged tree stand structure and attenuating water table fluctuations, is now intensively studied as a more sustainable alternative to current drainage and clear-cut practice. Next, a visit to a The  pristine site Tervalamminsuo will allow the participants to explore vegetation typical to boreal nutrient-poor bog and learn about its greenhouse gas exchange. Field clothing adjusted to weather and insects, such as mosquitos and ticks, as well as rubber boots are recommended, only in the first site, the terrain is boreal forest like, fairly dry. Lunch and coffee will be included.
Excursion is hosted by ALFAwetlands https://alfawetlands.eu/research project coordinated by Natural Resources Institute Finland (www.luke.fi).
