Getting around

Rotterdam is well-connected to major cities in Europe and beyond, making it easy to reach from outside the Netherlands. Here are the best options to get to Rotterdam, depending on your starting location:

1. By Air
  • Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM):
    • Located just 15 minutes from the city centre, this is the most convenient airport for direct access to Rotterdam. It offers flights from several European cities via airlines like Transavia and British Airways.
    • From the airport, you can take a taxi, bus (line 33), or shuttle to the city centre.
  • Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS):
    • One of Europe’s largest airports, Schiphol is just 25 minutes from Rotterdam by train (Intercity Direct). Trains depart frequently, and the station is located directly beneath the airport terminal.
  • Brussels Airport (BRU):
    • Located in Belgium, Brussels Airport is about 1.5 hours away from Rotterdam by high-speed train (Thalys). It’s a good option for travellers coming from long-haul destinations not served by Schiphol or Rotterdam Airport.

2. By Train
•    High-Speed Trains:
  • Eurostar:Eurostar now connects Rotterdam with major European cities, including Paris (2h40), Brussels (1h10), Antwerp (30 mins) and London (3h30)
    • This high-speed train is a convenient and eco-friendly way to travel, offering comfort and speed for international travellers. Trains arrive at Rotterdam Central Station, right in the heart of the city.
  • Intercity Direct:
    • A fast and frequent train connecting Rotterdam to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in just 25 minutes, making it ideal for travellers arriving by air.
•    Regular Trains:
  • For connections to neighbouring German cities like Cologne, Frankfurt, or Düsseldorf, regular intercity trains via NS or Deutsche Bahn are available.

3. By Bus
  • FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus connect Rotterdam to major European cities like Brussels, Paris, and Berlin. These buses arrive at Rotterdam’s central bus station, which is located next to Rotterdam Central Station.

4. By Car
  • Rotterdam is easily accessible via the Dutch highway network. Major highways like the A16 and A20 connect the city to Belgium, Germany, and other parts of the Netherlands. Keep in mind that parking in the city centre can be expensive, so consider park-and-ride options outside the city.
Rotterdam’s excellent transportation network ensures you’ll arrive smoothly and ready to explore.
