For the past five years the HealthyFoodAfrica project has worked in ten locations in six African countries to co-create local innovations and strategies to improve food systems.
The overall goal of the project was to make food systems more sustainable, equitable and resilient by reconnecting food production and food consumption in effective ways. A key aspect of our approach was the work in Food System Labs – a form of living labs - where diverse multi-stakeholder platforms were engaged to co-design and pilot a range of locally relevant solutions.
Innovations included: food safety trainings for informal vendors, advocacy for policy change, enhancing maize value chains with refugee women, innovative product development (zero-energy cooler, improved fish-smoking ovens, plant-based protein pasta, fish sausages, urban gardens integrating aquaponics systems, and many more.
